Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertisement:
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Updated Guidelines

Did you know that endorsements and testimonials in advertisement are regulated under the Federal Trade Commission Act by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)?  The "Act" states that "unfair methods of competition in or affecting commerce, and unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce, are declared unlawful."  This includes client testimonials in advertising materials, blogs and other social media. To assist advertisers in complying with the "Act," the FTC provides "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (Guides)." The Guides were recently updated and "address endorsements by consumers, experts, organizations, and celebrities, as well as the disclosure of important connections between advertisers and endorsers." If you use client testimonials in your advertising materials, blog and other social media, you'll need to be up to speed on the recent revisions to the Guides. AIGAC's Webinar will address the issues and updates that most impact the graduate admissions consulting industry and how you and your organization can comply.

"Business leaders constantly surround themselves with skilled advisors in order to make the best decisions. While the decisions are ultimately theirs, the process of bouncing ideas and talking through problems is tremendously valuable. The same is true in the admissions process where candidates may need guidance in exploring career options, identifying appropriate programs and determining the best way to position their candidacy. An organization like AIGAC assures both schools and candidates that there are industry standards in place and consulting firms linked to this organization are following ethical practices. It also opens the door for sharing best practices within the counseling industry and for closer engagement between the counselors and the schools." - Rosemaria Martinelli, former Associate Dean for Student Recruitment and Admissions, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business
